Isabeau - Shin Megami Tensei IV by slash000 Isabeau - Shin Megami Tensei IV by slash000
Isabeau comes from the family of Luxuries and is a veracious young woman with a strong mind. She is strong willed yet dignified, and there is a side of her the others must never discover. For this reason, Walter calls her "Iron Face" which does not please her at all.

So, Shin Megami Tensei IV came out yesterday! I got a first-run copy of the game, which means I got the Strategy and Design book and the Music disc as well. You should hop on that ASAP!

I popped open the book and saw the characters. Isabeau looked like a really interesting character, and since I have been excited about the game, I figured, why not, let's do a fan art!

I tried some new things with coloring on this one. I minimized the lines some which I normally don't do. I think it turned out okay although it took quite a bit longer than usual.

It's definitely super weird.  But I love weird, quirky games!  Videogames are such a great medium, I love it when games show me something interesting and different.

Great colouring! I really like the pose you chose for her, man i wish i had a 3ds just to play this game!!

A question, how did you minimize the lineart? did you work at a smaller brush size or perhaps you didnt do lineart at all? What program did you use? Nice work!!

Thanks!
So the idea of minimizing the line art for this was something I thought of while initially coloring it.

Basically I drew and inked the color like I always normally do.  But then when I was coloring it, I did the base colors and shadows and highlights like normal, but decided to alter the color of the ink lines to go along with the basic colors of the image they were adjacent to.  So for example I used a dark blue for the ink lines along the top edges of the coat, or a sort of reddish brown for the ink lines on edges of the skin tone.  Or a dark or light gray along the gloves.

Once that was done I looked at it and I was about to call it finished, but decided I wanted to see how it would look if I mixed the inking lines with the adjacent color a little bit to kinda give it a smoother transition.  It kinda made the inking blend in a little bit in some parts, or appear to be part of the lighting in other parts.  So the overall effect made the inking appear minimal.

The picture here is really just the result of that experimentation (which is why it's the first one in my gallery to have this).  I like the effect but I think it's best used in some circumstances and not others.  Like, a really bright, cartooney or comic-bookey looking image would benefit more from bright, fewer colors and stronger harder ink lines.  Where as this pic I wanted to try and mix and kind of paint a little more and thought it would be cool to see what happened when I blended the ink lines.

Hope that helps :)

Man, am I eager to acquire and play this game - absolutely loved SMT III: Nocturne and have highly enjoyed several other SMT titles as well. owo Here's hopin' that my Amazon order does in fact contain a first-run copy w/ the extras.

Anyhow, yeah, s'good that you've contributed to the incoming fanart flood already! ^_^ The line minimization benefits this piece - just don't lose entire days applying that technique.

Yeah there's still not a ton of fan art for the game out there yet.  Hopefully will be soon!  Really cool game.  You're probably still early enough to get a first run copy with the bonus stuff too.

Thanks!  And honestly I'm kinda surprised that there's not already more SMTIV art out there.
